A Brief Taste of Malta’s Sacred Goddess History
Malta is a small island (only 17 miles long and 9 miles wide), but despite its humble size has an estimated 66 recorded megalithic sites. It is home to some of the oldest megalithic temples in the world, many of which celebrate a vibrant goddess culture over 6000 years old. Scholars believe Malta’s temple complexes to have been built as sanctuaries for the worship of an ancient Great Mother Goddess.

The Goddess is about energy or consciousness – in Kundalini we refer to this as the Shatki energy of creation, often depicted as the rising serpent. The Goddess of Fertility is the most recognised statuette on the Maltese islands, There have been a few other renditions of the ‘fat lady’ as she is commonly known – The Venus of Malta is one of them.
In addition to being home to some of the oldest goddess ruins on the planet Malta is also situated on powerful ley lines on the Earth’s grid. It is said that the ancient neolithic sites were built on the ley lines of the earth and served to mark, anchor and harness the energy of the stars and the energy already present at these locations. Just as our bodies have lines of energy and power vortexes so too does the planet.
During the temple period the locals honoured the Divine Feminine Energy of the Goddess. The temple people had reverence and respect for the Divinity, they honoured its mysterious and magical energy, and they collaborated with its creative plan on earth.
“Malta is the manifestation on Earth of the Divine Feminine. The connection and bonding with the Mother is very much present in the Maltese psyche. The old prehistoric heritage sites, the new Christian era buildings, the landscape and the whole natural environment of the Maltese islands aspire to the maternal expression.” Francis Xavier Aloisio
Hal Saflieni Hypogeum
Buried under both rock and history lies the Hypogeum of Ħal-Saflieni in Malta. The ancient temple is the only prehistoric underground temple in the world. It dates back to nearly 3,500 years ago and holds a unique secret. It consists of three levels, the oldest of which dates to 3600 BCE. Initially, the site was a sacred feminine sanctuary. One of the rooms, named the “Oracle Chamber” is said to amplify voices dramatically, with certain frequencies resonating enough to be felt through the body. Its structure resonates at 111 Hz, or the ‘holy frequency.’ An ancient civilization has built underground temples around. Home of the “sleeping lady.” A mother goddess said to represent fertility, death, and afterlife. This unique subterranean complex has been listed as an individual UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to archaeological reports, Ħal-Saflieni cult practiced earth and nature oriented rituals, experiencing the divine cycles and rhythms of Earth, Moon, Sun, and the seasons.
Temple of Ħaġar Qim
“There is a potent fertility line of energy through the ancient temples of Ħaġar Qim, a strong connection to the cosmic mother’s womb of creation, that when alighted the womb expands. It’s a potent energy we can work with intent to enrich our heart and womb space with healing. The inner chambers of the temple are womb spaces where man goddess figures where found. Here energy lines are feminine but there is a gentle union of masculine energy which also flows inline and merges.” Kate Jane Wright
The Neolithic temples of Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra were built within a stone’s throw of each other. Ħaġar Qim stands imposingly on a hilltop that ends in sheer cliff, overlooking the azure Mediterranean Sea. Going through the solid doorway was meant to feel like entering the vagina of the Earth Goddess. The temple itself was regarded as a big womb in which people could enter to seek renewal. At Ħaġar Qim, the Venus of Malta, Neolithic’s top model, was unearthed. She is a stone-carved lady with plump curves who is supporting her breasts over her arm in a ‘look-at-these-treasures’ kind of posture.
“I found this fertile line of the goddess was also present at the temple of Tarxien and on the island of Gozo, Ggantajia Temple. Here a beautiful snake is carved by ancestors on a giant megalith, representing Shakti power! Legend tells how a giantess called Sunsuna built this temple amongst a landscape of wild thyme. When I approached them my womb exploded in energy. It was spiralling through me, at specific entrance points of the inner chambers it was strongest. It’s as if the goddess is steeped into the earth with every step. Walking the land it’s hard not to be activated with the feminine energy. My womb-space has well and truly been lit-up!” Kate Jane Wright
Temple of Mnajdra – Ancient Goddess Temple of the Sun, Moon and Stars!
Following the path down the hill amidst typical Maltese rocky terrain, you will reach the dramatic temple of Mnajdra. Tucked in the hollow of a cliff face, it is totally cut off from the modern world. Early in the morning, as the first rays of the rising sun hit the massive stones, the limestone façade becomes alive with a magical, golden glow. Its curving plan was meant to celebrated fertility and prosperity. Statues of nude Fat Ladies were also found here, carved into a sitting posture with their bulky buttocks planted firmly on the ground.

Gozo Island
Neolithic Gozo seems to have been all about the power of women: even the legend of how the Ġgantija temples were built features a mighty giantess. Archaeologists believe the temples to have been the site of a fertility cult. According to local folklore, these temples were constructed by a giantess as places of worship.
