Discovering Malta – The Land of the Goddess
Sacred Temples, Divine Feminine Energy & Women’s Retreats in Malta
Malta Women’s Retreats | Sacred Goddess Sites of the Sun & Moon
Malta may be a small island — just 17 miles long and 9 miles wide — but it holds one of the most powerful concentrations of ancient Goddess temples in the world. With over 66 recorded megalithic sites, Malta is home to some of the oldest sacred temples on Earth, many dating back more than 6,000 years.
These temples were not simply architectural wonders — they were sanctuaries of the Divine Feminine, places of womb wisdom, fertility rites, cosmic alignment, and spiritual renewal. It is no surprise that Malta has become a magnet for women’s retreats, spiritual pilgrimages, and Goddess devotion.
Malta: Birthplace of Ancient Goddess Worship
Scholars believe Malta’s temple complexes were built to honour an ancient Great Mother Goddess, representing creation, fertility, death, and rebirth. The most famous artefacts — often called the “Fat Lady” or Venus of Malta — symbolise abundance, womb power, and the creative force of life itself.
In Kundalini traditions, this creative intelligence is known as Shakti energy — the rising serpent of consciousness. When women visit Malta, many report feeling a deep sense of remembrance, womb activation, emotional release, and deep spiritual connection to mother earth.
This is why Malta is such a powerful location for a spiritual women’s retreat.
Why Malta Is a Powerful Destination for Women’s Retreats
Beyond the temples themselves, Malta sits on powerful ley lines within the Earth’s energetic grid. Ancient civilisations understood these locations as places where cosmic and terrestrial energies meet.
Just as our bodies contain chakras and energy channels, the Earth has power points — and Malta is one of them.
During the Neolithic Temple Period, local priestesses honoured:
- Lunar and solar cycles
- Seasonal rites of passage
- Feminine creation and regeneration
- The sacred intelligence of the Earth
This lineage is still palpable today, making Malta an extraordinary location for Goddess retreats, womb healing journeys, and sacred feminine initiations.
Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum – The Underground Womb of the Goddess
Hidden beneath the modern city lies the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, the only known prehistoric underground temple in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Dating back to 3600 BCE, the Hypogeum is believed to have been a sacred feminine sanctuary. Its famous Oracle Chamber amplifies sound at 111 Hz, sometimes referred to as the “holy frequency,” allowing vibrations to be felt through the body.
This temple housed the Sleeping Lady — a reclining Mother Goddess figure symbolising fertility, death, and the afterlife. Rituals here were deeply connected to:
- Death & Rebirth
- The Sleeping Lady of Malta
- Ancient Feminine Ritual
- Sound resonance
- Initiation and rebirth
Today, private access to this site is rare, making it one of the most sacred experiences included in a Malta women’s retreat.
Ħaġar Qim & Mnajdra – Temples of the Sun, Moon & Stars
The temples of Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra sit dramatically overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Entering these temples was symbolically experienced as entering the womb of the Earth Goddess.
These sacred structures align with:
- Summer and winter solstices
- Equinoxes
- Solar and lunar cycles
“There is a potent fertility line of energy through the ancient temples of Ħaġar Qim, a strong connection to the cosmic mother’s womb of creation, that when alighted the womb expands. It’s a potent energy we can work with intent to enrich our heart and womb space with healing. The inner chambers of the temple are womb spaces where man goddess figures where found. Here energy lines are feminine but there is a gentle union of masculine energy which also flows inline and merges.” Kate Jane Wright

Archaeological findings include Goddess figurines with exaggerated feminine forms, celebrating fertility, nourishment, and abundance.
Women visiting these temples often describe profound heart and womb activations, especially during solstice ceremonies — making them ideal locations for women’s spiritual retreats in Malta.
Gozo & Ġgantija – Island of the Great Mother
On the neighbouring island of Gozo, the Ġgantija Temples tell the story of a mighty giantess who built these sacred spaces herself. Archaeologists believe these temples were the heart of a fertility cult and feminine spiritual lineage.
Walking this land, many women experience:
- Heightened intuition
- Emotional release
- A deep sense of ancestral remembrance
Gozo is often described as softer, slower, and deeply nurturing — a perfect complement to Malta for sacred feminine retreats.

“I found this fertile line of the goddess was also present at the temple of Tarxien and on the island of Gozo, Ggantajia Temple. Here a beautiful snake is carved by ancestors on a giant megalith, representing Shakti power! Legend tells how a giantess called Sunsuna built this temple amongst a landscape of wild thyme. When I approached them my womb exploded in energy. It was spiralling through me, at specific entrance points of the inner chambers it was strongest. It’s as if the goddess is steeped into the earth with every step. Walking the land it’s hard not to be activated with the feminine energy. My womb-space has well and truly been lit-up!” Kate Jane Wright
